Day by day

A shape, not a schedule. Every one of these is rewritten around the people travelling it.

  1. Out east

    Bangkok to Trat, then the boat. Thailand's fourth-largest island, fewer than three thousand people, no traffic light.

  2. Nothing

    Deliberately. A beach, a book, a swim before breakfast. This is the point of the trip, not a gap in it.

  3. The waterfall and the far side

    Klong Chao in the morning before anyone, then the east coast fishing villages on stilts.

  4. On the water

    A boat for the day to the small islands south, with lunch aboard and snorkelling off the back.

  5. Koh Mak

    An hour across: flatter, quieter, palms and one road. Sunset here is the one people remember.

  6. Back

    The long way home, or on to Cambodia if you would rather keep going.
